Developing a particular vision for a school inevitably involves key judgements about the strategic direction it should take. Hutchinson wanted to create an ethos based on partnership and student engagement.

“We often underestimate that ethos and culture are at root at least partly created by the students. A lot of the school improvement models ignore that. They’re about strong management and leadership and are often a top-down model. That can work in terms of a quick fix. A strongly managed community is clearly better than an anarchic one. But to move beyond that, if you want to take your school on a journey to be outstanding, you have got to have students as partners in that journey. You can’t do any better than be a good school unless the students are active partners and subscribe to the view of what the school needs to be. A crucial part of the head’s job is to ensure that the students are shaping the vision for the school. They are the ones that leave that legacy for the younger ones; they’re the ones that really do create the culture. But they don’t create it in their own right; they need to be taught how to create a culture. That’s our job.”

A crucial part of this shaping process is a leader’s ability to make the right judgements. This involves a complex mixture of instinct, experience, self-awareness and being honest enough to acknowledge and correct one’s own mistakes.
